The ASEAN Training Center for Preventive Drug Education (ATCPDE) conducted the ASEAN Seminar-Workshop on Community-Based Prevention o15 Drug Abuse on September 2 to 6, 2013 at the Luxent Hotel Korea Avenue, Quezon City, under sponsorship of Japan ASEAN Integration Fund (JAIF).

The seminar-workshop was attended by 20 participants from nine ASEAN countries with foreign experts from Cambodia, Indonesia, Malaysia and Thailand serving as resource speakers. Eight experts based in the Philippines also served as resource speakers and workshop facilitators. They were from the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crimes (UNODC), Japanese Embassy, University of the Philippines Manila, Dangerous Drugs Board (DDB), Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) and Department of Education (DepEd).

The seminar-workshop worked on the following objectives: (1) Identify effective treatment and intervention programs at the community level; (2) Develop community-based drug abuse prevention and health promotion approaches; (3) Design community-specific programs and activities for drug abuse prevention; and (4) Conduct monitoring and evaluation of the community-based drug abuse prevention program.

The topics on focus during the seminar-workshop were: Drug Problem Scenario in the Southeast Asian Region, Sharing of Community-Based Preventive Drug Education (Family Drug Abuse Prevention Program, "Barkada Kontra Droga", Special Drug Education Center), Community-Based Approaches to Drug Abuse Prevention, Designing an Effective Preventive Drug Education Program at the Community Level, Community-Based Preventive Drug Education Program Development, Techniques and Tools, Sourcing and Networking for Community-Based Preventive Drug Education Program, Development of Monitoring Scheme and Use of Evaluation Instruments and Strategic Areas for Action.

The seminar-workshop was actively supported by DDB, Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA), Vice Mayor's Office of the City of Marikina, Philippine Information Agency (PIA), Commission on Higher Education (CHED), DSWD, DepEd, U.P. National Institute for Science and Mathematics Education Development (UP NISMED) and the U.P. Integrated School (UPIS).
